A windmill is a machine which converts the energy of wind to rotational motion, used to grind grain, extract seed oils, obtaining fresh water from underground and drainage. The most famous old windmills are in Netherlands, especially the windmills of Kinderdijk, placed on the list of UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.

The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by France in 1876 as a gesture of international goodwill to celebrate the 100th anniversary of American independence. In her right hand, Lady Liberty holds a torch representing freedom; in her left, a tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. The seven points on her crown represent the dream of freedom spreading to the seven seas and continents of the world. The broken chains at her feet symbolize new-found freedom.

Buried in tropical rainforest, the existence of the Palenque ruins built by the Mayans, whose civilization flourished in Central America from 300 to 900 A.D., remained unknown for 800 years. Despite excavation work carried out since the 19th century, the dimensions of the Temple of the Inscriptions - 23 meters in height and with nine stone levels - kept the burial chamber of the King Pacal hidden until 1952. Even today, most of these ruins remain buried in dense jungle.

The formal name of this structure, a symbol of Paris, is l'Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile, based on the twelve avenues radiating from the center of the Arc de Triomphe, creating a star (étoile) pattern. The Arc de Triomphe was built in the 19th century by Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate his military triumphs, following the custom of ancient Rome. Its sides are decorated with engravings and reliefs depicting scenes from Napoleon's battles.
